Li Ang

The arrests for Amanda Zhao’s murder took many years to complete, and responsibility was found to be mainly because the Canadian government is reluctant in giving evidence of murder cases to China, as Chinese authorities allow for capital punishment for murder, which is illegal in Canada.

Li Ang, Reports Girlfriend Missing to Police, 3 Days Later Boards Plane To China While Hikers Find Her Dead Body In A Suitcase.

Amanda Zhao Wei  (1981 – October 2002) was a Chinese student in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, studying English at Coquitlam College who was murdered in October 2002. She was reported missing on October 9, 2002, by her boyfriend Li Ang and her body was found inside a suitcase by hikers near Stave Lake on October 20, 2002, where an autopsy revealed that Zhao had been strangled to death

Zhao’s boyfriend Li Ang was immediately a suspect but arrests in China took until 2004 and they released Li Ang due to lack of evidence. Li Ang claimed that he had killed Zhao in a play like pillow fight.? In 2009, police in China arrested Li based on evidence provided by the RCMP showing an autopsy determined she had been strangled. It took 10 years but finally Li Ang was sentenced to life in prison in 2012, which was later dropped to a 7 year sentence. Li Ang was a Chinese national and a computer science student at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Another man Zhang Han who is Li Ang’s cousin was also arrested. He helped dispose of the body and helped Li Ang travel back to China. All charges were later dropped against Zhang Han because his confession was improperly obtained. Sounds more like they just didn’t want to fill out paper work with China.

Thomas Kosberg

Thomas Gordon Kosberg was born October 2nd, 1948 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Tom as he went by, had a history of mental illness, but no one could imagine him plotting a murder, let along killing his own family. Thomas Kosberg, who, by most accounts, seemed like a normal teenager in a large family. A neighbour even remarked that the family “had the nicest, most beautiful children.”

On December 9, 1965, 17-year-old Kosberg made chocolate milkshakes for his mother, father, and four younger brothers and sisters, added some sleeping pills, waited for them to go to bed, and then hacked them to death with an axe. Only a baby survived. But there was some obvious planning put into the murders. Tom’s mother had been entertaining her best friend Florence the night before the murder. Sometime around 11pm, Florence left to go home. Thomas waited for Florence to leave and for his father to return home from his late shift at the Allied Heat and Fuel Co. (roughly 1am) before committing the murders. There was also a large span of time between the murders and when they were reported (from 1am-7:45am).

After the murders Kosberg changed his clothes, took his father’s car, and ran it into a power pole, whereupon he stole another car, and finally telephoned Robert Estergaard, who took him to Dr. Wong. According to Estergaard, Kosberg was trembling, having cramps, and kept holding his stomach, but at times would also drift off to sleep. They arrived at Dr. Wong’s at 7 a.m., where Kosberg confessed to the crime, stating that he had “done someting awful.” Wong called the police at 7:45 a.m. and Kosberg was arrested shortly afterwards

When officers arrived at the crime scene they found Mr. and Mrs. Kosberg dead in their beds, while their son Vincent lay dead on the floor, and Osborne jr. was in his crib, apparently unharmed. In the rear bedroom they discovered the body of Barry, and in the front bedroom that of Gayle Kosberg. Marianne, who was in the same room as Gayle, was still alive in her bed, but with serious head injuries. She was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she underwent emergency surgery, and eventually died on December 19, without regaining consciousness.

The court ruled that he was not guilty by reason of insanity in 1967, and Tom was shipped off to Riverview. He was released 12 years later, married and worked at Vancouver Children’s Hospital for the next 30 years. He died in 2016.

Zhao’s West Vancouver Mansion

Blair Adams

This has to be one of the most bizarre and strangest mysteries I have ever read about. Blair Adams was a 31 resident of Vancouver, British Columbia. Who was found dead in a Knoxville, Tennessee parking lot in 1996 with no pants on his shirt ripped open and over $4,000 in different currency denominations surrounding him. The currency was Canadian, American, and German.

There were rumours that Blair was an ex drug addict he also battled alcoholism for a long time. But at the time of his disappearance he appeared to have cleaned himself up and had a great job as a foreman at a construction company which he apparently loved.

How it all started: On July 5th, 1996 Robert Dennis Blair Adams went and took all the money out of his savings account(over $6,000) along with thousands of dollars in gold and jewelry. He attempted to cross the US border but as a single man with all that money border guards assumed he was a drug dealer and was denied entry into the United States. So he headed back to Vancouver and quit his job the next day. Then went and bought a round trip ticket to Germany. He also later went to a friends house claiming someone was trying to kill him. (Probably a drug king pin could be HA who knows).

Then the next day he ditched his tickets to Germany and rented a car and this time was able to get across into the US and went to Seattle and bought a plane ticket to Washington, D.C. He got to D.C and rented a car (Toyota Camry) and ended up in Knoxville, Tennessee. While in Knoxville he went to fuel up the car and told the gas jockey that the keys did not work. When the gas jockey realised that the keys weren’t even the keys for the car that Blair had Blair took off to a hotel.

While at the hotel the manager thought it was strange as Blair entered and exited the lobby 5 times before renting a room. Below is surveillance from the hotel

After getting a key for the room (which he never even entered) he paid for the room with a $100 bill and left without getting his almost $50 in change. Blair was never seen alive again. Then about 12 hours later he was found dead in the hotel parking lot on July 11th, 1996. With no pants and $4,000 in Canadian, American, and German currency around him. So obviously robbery was not the motive. His pants were also removed in a way that someone would rip them off not how you would take them off yourself. Also his socks were found inside out. It appeared that his clothes were taken off post mortem. The cause of his death was determined to be due to a blow to the stomach although he also had many cuts and abrasions on him.

Other strange pieces of this case:

  • Blair knew no one in Knoxville. Police and is family are baffled why he would even be there in the first place.
  • Rumour has it that the reason Blair had purchased a ticket to Germany is that at one point he had worked construction there. He was there for apparently about 4 months. He apparently had a fling with a younger woman there (17 or 18). Someone even said who was apparently a close friend of Blair’s that people from Germany may of had something to do with his death.
  • He was also suppose to be working in Germany for 2 years yet came back after a couple of months.
  • Despite years of drug and alcohol abuse toxicology reports showed he had no signs of drugs or alchol in his system at the time of his death.
  • When Blair purchased his plane ticket to Washington, D.C he bought a one way ticket for $700. Yet a round trip ticket was on sale and he could of got it for $400. Even if not coming back why pay more?
  • It has also been rumoured that Blair was bi-sexual (irrelevant to the case though)

My thoughts on the case: There are many scenarios that could of happened here some say he just went nuts and killed himself. But who kills themself with a blow to the stomach? Others have said it was a sheer coincidence, but why not take the money. Others say someone stalked him all the way to Knoville and killed him.

Others have brought up a theory that during his time in Germany he could of pissed off the girls family he knew. Or on another note doing construction around military bases seen something he shouldn’t of due the way he was killed which probably took at least 2 men they must of had military training. If this is the case.

Another great scenario another person brought up was maybe the girl he met in Germany he was going to go and meet there. Then she decided to meet him in the US (Hence trading in the German tickets) then someone from her family followed her and killed Blair.

Personally I think he ripped of a biker gang huge, or ratted someone out, or maybe something worse. And it must of been huge and they wanted to send a message. Biker gangs have ties and branches everywhere. Someone probably followed him to Seattle seen him board the plane there to Washington, D.C faxed a picture to a branch in Washington, D.C and someone associated there followed him from the airport to Knoxville and did him in there. Taking the pants off of someone I have heard is like shoving a rat in someones mouth it is a sign of someone who snitched and a message meant to be sent. Also his shirt being ripped open could of been to see if he was wired. It is probably the most logical thing I can think of.

This is a case I highly doubt will ever be solved and I have scoured the internet to find what I could on it. It is one of those mysteries that just keeps making me scratch my head.
