On August 1st, 1995 44 year old Jeffrey Arenburg went to CJOH Media in Ottawa, Ontario and shot and killed sports broadcaster Brian Smith. Arenburg’s reason he thought the radio station was broadcasting messages in his head. Brian Smith just had the unfortunate luck of being the first one Arenburg seen. Oh if you couldn’t tell Jeffrey Arenburg be a paranoid schizophrenic, who would of thought???He had reportedly been exhibiting symptoms of schizophrenia for some time but was not officially diagnosed until 1990. At some point he began to believe that his ex-wife and her family were “torturing” him by broadcasting his thoughts on radio and television. Arenburg was hospitalized in 1990 after stating to authorities in court that his former in laws were stealing his thoughts and selling them to Hollywood.?
Following the shooting when police searched Arenburg’s apartment they found a list of media personnel in the Ottawa area.
In 1992 Arenburg assaulted a radio station manager in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia where he lived working as a scallop fisherman. He was given either a $300 fine or 2 weeks in jail. He never showed up for trial and skipped town and moved to Ottawa.
Arenburg was found not criminally responsible in Smith’s death, due to his mental condition. In 2001, the Ontario Review Board began to grant Arenburg 72-hour release. He applied for full conditional release in 2004. As of June 2005 he had been living in the Barrie area with his brother since March 2003, and had recently graduated from a community college.
He is reformed. What could possibly go wrong?
On November 29, 2007, Arenburg was arrested after assaulting a U.S. customs officer in Buffalo, New York at the Peace Bridge International Crossing. According to officials, Arenburg attempted to enter the United States on a commercial vehicle as a passenger and was denied entry due to past criminal convictions. When they sat him down in the interview room he punched one of the border officers and busted open his lip. He spent a year in American jail until he got deported back to Canada.
In 2012, Arenburg was arrested when he fled the scene after being pulled-over for speeding in Quebec. He was sentenced to six months in jail after calling the Judge an idiot.???
