David John Gorton

On Sept. 19, 1997: David John Gorton believing that his fiance Heidi Challand (28) was cheating on him “snapped”. Heidi and her four young children (Robert, 12, David, 9, Calvin, 6 and Jewel, 2) were bludgeoned to death with an axe in their Black Creek home on Vancouver Island. The murdered children were not Gorton’s, but he did have two young children living in Victoria. The bodies were also discovered by Gorton’s parents who were in from Nanaimo to visit.

This was not Gorton’s first violent outburst either. In 1977 he lured his 16 year old girlfriend to a out of the way spot and stabbed her 19 times. She was in the hospital for a month. Then in 1983 he attacked his then wife with a knife and served 2 years in prison for aggravated assault.

Gorton was on the run for a few days until the police found him very close to home in a motel room in Courtenay, BC.

He was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no parole for at least 25 years.

Li Ang

The arrests for Amanda Zhao’s murder took many years to complete, and responsibility was found to be mainly because the Canadian government is reluctant in giving evidence of murder cases to China, as Chinese authorities allow for capital punishment for murder, which is illegal in Canada.

Li Ang, Reports Girlfriend Missing to Police, 3 Days Later Boards Plane To China While Hikers Find Her Dead Body In A Suitcase.

Amanda Zhao Wei  (1981 – October 2002) was a Chinese student in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, studying English at Coquitlam College who was murdered in October 2002. She was reported missing on October 9, 2002, by her boyfriend Li Ang and her body was found inside a suitcase by hikers near Stave Lake on October 20, 2002, where an autopsy revealed that Zhao had been strangled to death

Zhao’s boyfriend Li Ang was immediately a suspect but arrests in China took until 2004 and they released Li Ang due to lack of evidence. Li Ang claimed that he had killed Zhao in a play like pillow fight.? In 2009, police in China arrested Li based on evidence provided by the RCMP showing an autopsy determined she had been strangled. It took 10 years but finally Li Ang was sentenced to life in prison in 2012, which was later dropped to a 7 year sentence. Li Ang was a Chinese national and a computer science student at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Another man Zhang Han who is Li Ang’s cousin was also arrested. He helped dispose of the body and helped Li Ang travel back to China. All charges were later dropped against Zhang Han because his confession was improperly obtained. Sounds more like they just didn’t want to fill out paper work with China.

Thomas Kosberg

Thomas Gordon Kosberg was born October 2nd, 1948 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Tom as he went by, had a history of mental illness, but no one could imagine him plotting a murder, let along killing his own family. Thomas Kosberg, who, by most accounts, seemed like a normal teenager in a large family. A neighbour even remarked that the family “had the nicest, most beautiful children.”

On December 9, 1965, 17-year-old Kosberg made chocolate milkshakes for his mother, father, and four younger brothers and sisters, added some sleeping pills, waited for them to go to bed, and then hacked them to death with an axe. Only a baby survived. But there was some obvious planning put into the murders. Tom’s mother had been entertaining her best friend Florence the night before the murder. Sometime around 11pm, Florence left to go home. Thomas waited for Florence to leave and for his father to return home from his late shift at the Allied Heat and Fuel Co. (roughly 1am) before committing the murders. There was also a large span of time between the murders and when they were reported (from 1am-7:45am).

After the murders Kosberg changed his clothes, took his father’s car, and ran it into a power pole, whereupon he stole another car, and finally telephoned Robert Estergaard, who took him to Dr. Wong. According to Estergaard, Kosberg was trembling, having cramps, and kept holding his stomach, but at times would also drift off to sleep. They arrived at Dr. Wong’s at 7 a.m., where Kosberg confessed to the crime, stating that he had “done someting awful.” Wong called the police at 7:45 a.m. and Kosberg was arrested shortly afterwards

When officers arrived at the crime scene they found Mr. and Mrs. Kosberg dead in their beds, while their son Vincent lay dead on the floor, and Osborne jr. was in his crib, apparently unharmed. In the rear bedroom they discovered the body of Barry, and in the front bedroom that of Gayle Kosberg. Marianne, who was in the same room as Gayle, was still alive in her bed, but with serious head injuries. She was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she underwent emergency surgery, and eventually died on December 19, without regaining consciousness.

The court ruled that he was not guilty by reason of insanity in 1967, and Tom was shipped off to Riverview. He was released 12 years later, married and worked at Vancouver Children’s Hospital for the next 30 years. He died in 2016.

Zhao’s West Vancouver Mansion

Phillip Fraser

When I use to watch Unsolved Mysteries as a kid this story really got to me. They have never solved it and the only updated from the original story is that they found his body and burnt out car. The question is “WHO killed Phillip Fraser”.
On June 14th, 1988 25 year old Phillip Innes Fraser(Born Jan 3, 1965) was heading from his home in Anchorage, Alaska down to college in Seattle, Washington. Which to begin with is a long drive.
When he went throw the border from Alaska to the Yukon he had to drop off hand guns. Due to the fact they are illegal in Canada. Sort of irrelevant to the case but maybe if he had them on his person he would still be alive today.
600 miles from the border at a cafe a hitchhiker was dropped off. When this man was in the cafe there the owners though something was fucked up with him right from the get go. Even as far as saying they thought that he escaped from a mental institution.

Shortly after the nut bag arrived Phillip Fraser came up and got some gas. The nut bag went out and asked Phillip for a ride. Phillip said no. I have been up there numerous times. And if someone is too fucked up to give a ride to and help out. They have something wrong with them.
When Phillip took off the nut bag chased the car. Phillip finally decided to give him a ride. Which turned out to be the last time he was seen alive.
200 miles south of the cafe and 8 hours later a man flagged down a ride. The Olsen’s from Kitwanga, BC. The Olsen’s were told by the man that he was having car trouble. They also felt that he was acting very nervous. But at the time they chalked that up to him maybe being scared as he was alone out in the middle of no where. The Olsen’s went as far as to let the man stay at their house in the basement. With all their guns to boot.  The man told the Olsen’s that his name was Phillip Fraser and he was heading down to Washington to study medicine.
The man tried to sell the car to the Olsen’s for a plane ticket. When the Olsen’s said they couldn’t do it for a few days. But he couldn’t wait that long. The man also pulled out 2 wallets which made the Olsen’s a tad suspicious of him. The man then took off.
12 hours later Phillip’s burnt out car was found in Prince George, BC at a car wash. 6 weeks later they found Phillip’s body in a gravel turn around. He had been shot to death.

This case has never been solved and the hitchhiker is the primary suspect. Problem is no one knows who he is. In 1988 they figure the man was about 25 years old. He was described as having rotten teeth, a beer belly, and strong body odor. The Olsen’s said that he seemed to be familiar with the Toronto and Seattle areas.
Sadly not solved and the odds of it getting slimmer by the day. Phillip’s father died in 2014 Serial killer Michael McGray may be responsible as he killed numerous Canadian hitchhikers and resembles the suspect sketch.

Kam McLeod And Bryer Schmegelsky

Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky were two young Canadian men who between July 14th and July 19th 2019 killed 3 people in Northern Canada.

Kam McLeod was 19 at the time of the killings and Bryer Schmegelsky was 18. They were from Port Alberni, British Columbia. Both guys were 6’4 and skinny. On July 12th, 2019 they purchased a SKS semi-automatic rifle and ammo at a Cabella’s Store in Nanaimo, British Columbia. Which McLeod bought with his firearm possession and acquisition license. The two were childhood friends who were described as gamer loners with no violent tendencies. They both worked at Wal Mart in Port Alberni. They told people they were going up to the Yukon to look for work.

Australian Lucas Fowler (23) and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese’s (24) van broke down on the Alaska Highway 20 kilometers south of Liard Hot Springs, BC. A man who was a mechanic stopped to see if the couple was alright at about 3:20 pm on July 14th. The mechanic who was with his wife said it seemed the couple had it all under control and they left. At 7 am the next morning the couples bodies were discovered by a highway worker. Both victims were found in a ditch near the fan with visible gun shot wounds. Their van was discovered with the windows smashed in and the doors wide open.

On July 18th, 2019 in Jade City, B.C., Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, are spotted in a store where they stopped for free coffee. Jade City is about 350 kilometers from where the two bodies were found.

Leonard Dyck

On July 19th, 2019 a burnt out pick up truck was discovered on a bridge on Highway 37. The body of Vancouver resident Leonard Dyck(64) was found 2 kilometers south of the burnt out vehicle near Dease Lake, British Columbia. His death was similar to Fowler and Deese’s. Leonard Dyck was a botanist lecturer at University of British Columbia. It is believed that the pair killed Fowler and Deese before going to the Yukon then coming back into BC and killing Dyck. Dyck was described as a loving man who would of gave anyone the shirt of his back by friends and family. The bullets and shell casings near Dyck’s body matched casings that were found at Fowler and Deese’s murder scene. “We are truly heartbroken by the sudden and tragic loss of Len. He was a loving husband and father. His death has created unthinkable grief and we are struggling to understand what has happened,” Dyck’s family said in a statement released by police.

Mcleod and Schmegelsky were first reported as missing as they were operating the vehicle found burnt out on highway 37. On July 22nd the RCMP found a possible link between the missing people and the murder victims.

On July 23rd, 2019 a burning Toyota Rav 4 was found near Fox Lake Cree Nation just north of Gillam, Manitoba believed to have been driven by the missing pair. Right after the discovery the RCMP sought out second degree murder charges for McLeod and Schmegelsky.

Once the info went to the media a resident of Cold Lake, Alberta came forward saying he helped McLeod and Schmegelsky get their Rav 4 unstuck on July 21st. Later that day the pair was found on video camera in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. Which the police received the next day.

People also reported seeing the pair in the Gillam, Manitoba area on July 22nd, 2019. The pair were actually stopped by the Native Band Constables in Split Lake, Manitoba for a routine alcohol check. That was the last known confirmed spotting of the pair.

On July 24th the RCMP had deployed an emergency response team, a negotiation crisis team, underwater diving team, and canine units to the surrounding area around Gillam.

After searching over 500 homes and having sightings as far away as Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. So after 9 days of hunting for the fugitives the RCMP said they were scaling back the search.

On August 2nd, 2019 a tour guide reported to the RCMP that he had spotted a blue sleeping bag at the edge of a river near the Hudson’s Bay. A few days later the RCMP said that they found several items including a damaged rowboat that they believed belonged to the wanted men.

On August 7th, 2019 the police found 2 bodies. It was the bodies of Kam Mcleod and Bryer Schmegelsky. They died of self inflicted gun shot wounds. It is believed that McLeod shot Schmegelsky before turning the gun on himself. Forensics later proved the 2 guns they had also were the guns that killed Dyck, Fowler, and Deese.

Videos were later found of McLeod and Schmegelsky admitting to the three murders. But they gave no motive or reason. “Schmegelsky states that they are responsible for the three murders. They were going to march to Hudson Bay where they planned to hijack a boat and go to Europe or Africa,” the police report says. The camera that the pair used to make the videos belonged to victim Leonard Dyck.

According to the report, in one of the last videos, Schmegelsky says they have shaved themselves in preparation for their own deaths and “now plan to go back and kill more people and expect to be dead in a week.”. Thankfully there were no more victims.
